Samick has long used it’s Greg Bennett line to offer excellent instruments with interesting design features at relatively low prices. This Royale series RL-3 offers exactly that.
At first blush this appears to be a thinline hollowbody with a single cutaway. However, the sides and center-block of this instrument are actually one piece of wood, adding rigidity and making this more of a chambered solid-body in archtop clothes. Then again, it’s not quite a chambered solid either. Tonally this instrument is warm mids and sharp attack, and the Duncan Designed HB101 pickups definitely give this thing some heat.
Fit-and-finish wise, the top is a flamed maple affair in Samick’s amber finish. The equipment is all chrome and cream, and the crown inlays in the rosewood fingerboard make this a very handsome axe indeed.
There is very little wear, though there is a crack in the bottom of the side. I am told this is a common occurrence due to the unusual construction.
Original hardshell case is included.
