When we in the shop think oddball retro-styled guitar equipment, our minds tend to jump to Danelectro. Between their phenomenal guitar shapes and array of various effects (even their ‘Vintage Power Supply’ branded 9v batteries!), the aesthetic both visually and aurally is brilliant; almost-but-not-quite too gaudy is the name of the game. Enter, then, the FAB tone.
This is Danelectro’s take on a vintage distortion pedal, and it’s pretty swell. Control-wise it sports a volume for control for headroom, a 2-band EQ (Bass and Treble, unlike many distortions that will often have a single ‘tone’ control), and the FAB control, which gives you a crispy high-gain distortion that cuts right through the mix and in to the core of your being.
The casing is a durable metal form with a rubber foot on the bottom. It’ll take a 9v battery or a wall-wort in the front, and is pretty no-frills otherwise. fit-and-finish includes Dano’s retro shaping invoking the rear end of a ’58 Impala and is colored with a sophisticated, no-nonsense burgundy-and-creme pant job.
This particular specimen is in impeccable shape and includes the original box.
